These are “credit card” tracings, as in they were drawn in the size of a credit card, pretty much just to capture the form and basic value of the pieces. They were taken from my Diebenkornesque photos (see: my take on Diebenkorn) and adapted to fit the medium. Graphite and plain printer paper, wheeee!
I had to adjust the brightness and contrast so it would look like something…I don’t press very hard with the pencil.

The song, an instrumental by Thrice called Night Diving. <embed src=”http://www.metacafe.com/fplayer/979974/final_fantasy_thrice_night_diving.swf” width=”400″ height=”345″ wmode=”transparent” pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash”> </embed><br><font size = 1><a href=”http://www.metacafe.com/watch/979974/final_fantasy_thrice_night_diving/”>Final Fantasy – Thrice – Night Diving</a> – <a href=”http://www.metacafe.com/”>Watch more funny videos here</a></font> (Don’t watch the video, I didn’t make it and it has nothing to do with the piece. Just hit play and listen.)
From this piece, I listened, divined, labored, and attempted to capture the soul of the music.
Be thankful I didn’t choose the Matterhorn Yodelers song.

and put them together. The form from this picture:
and the imagery from my google search on Tombstone (see the post where I put all those pictures on the blog), led to this:

For extra credit, I chose to spend $5 on the ever-frivolous purple hair dye. Now, normally, this would cost closer to $11.00, but I bought it at Boutique Hypnotica, where I work part-time, and get a fat 50% discount.

The assignment called for finding Diebenkorn-like spaces in and around Greensboro, photographing them, and from there…well, that’s a story for another blog. These are the pictures I took, and I think they were fairly successful in objective and execution. See if you can find these spaces

I worked with Jason on this one. Our approach at first was to take halves and reproduce as closely as possible from each of our ends. I intended to switch at some point and correct the inevitable mistakes we’d both make. Alas, I wasn’t there for the second go-round, and he wasn’t there for the 3rd. So it wasn’t as effective as it could have been, but it still came out alright, especially if you don’t compare it to the original!

5 sheets of the same size plexiglass. Several sheets of different colored paper. Scissors or exacto. Creativity. This is what is required to pull off the project. In our case, after we’d set up all these little bits of paper, we looked at it from the underside, and liked the look of that better. The reason? The reflection from each layer showed subtle hints of color.
Though my favorite was the fish pond. I thought that was rather ingenious.

This was a really fun exercise, where we took wood cutouts of various shapes and sizes, and created art meant to be viewed from above in 2d. I found it really helpful to broaden my horizons as it were, by getting inspiration from what my fellow students were doing, and also from the input of my own group.
this was random placing to make something interesting
this is the one we made a shape out of our pieces
No spaces showing in between any of the pieces
the only space showing fits another piece that is incorporated into the design
arranged in a logical manner. We chose to build up.
and the side view of that same one

Ok, I was trying to sound like an idiot there. But since this silly game of too-easy checkers, I’ve since learned to play chess, and wish I knew that beforehand, so that I could have drawn the fun stuff instead of little circles. Oh well. It appears we had a good time though, judge for yourself by the pictures!
